School Review – Week 5
Our School Review is scheduled from Tuesday 12 August until Thursday 14th August 2025 (week 5).
Reviews play an important part in how the Department of Education supports school improvement. They provide schools with independent feedback, tailored to their context and needs. All Queensland state schools undergo a review at least once every 4 years. Schools are generally reviewed in the year that they are due to update their 4-year strategic plan. Review findings and feedback help to inform this planning process. Through meaningful engagement and input from school staff, students and communities, reviews involve the evaluation of evidence and practice. Schools are not ranked or given a performance rating. They are provided with a comprehensive report detailing the key findings and recommended improvement strategies for consideration.
Feedback from parents and the community is an important part of school reviews, with everyone encouraged to have their say. Conversations with a review team member can be in person or over the phone. All feedback remains confidential. Reviewers endeavour to connect with parents and carers before or after school around school grounds and car parks.
To register your interest in participating in our upcoming school review, please contact your school office.
2025 School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys are currently being conducted and will close on 22 August 2025. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) are being invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey was emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 21 July. The invitation was from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.

You're Invited: Official Opening of Our New Adventure Playground!
We’re excited to announce the official opening of our brand-new adventure playground, proudly funded through a Playground Grant from the Queensland Government and the generous support of our BPSS P&C. This exciting new space will provide endless fun and active play opportunities for our students.
The opening celebration will be held on Wednesday 13th August, from 3:00–4:00pm, with a special guest appearance by the Minister for Education and the Arts, the Honourable John-Paul Langbroek, who will officially open the playground.
To celebrate the occasion, the P&C will be hosting a free sausage sizzle for all attendees. We look forward to seeing our school community come together to enjoy this exciting milestone!

Kyoto Seibo study tour visit
We were delighted to recently host a study tour visit from 19 students of Kyoto Seibo Gakuin Elementary School in Japan. The visit was a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and building international friendships. A significant highlight of the occasion was the signing of a Friendship School Statement of Understanding by our Principal, Mrs Robyn Hutchins, and Kyoto Seibo Gakuin’s Principal, Mrs Masako Nakajima. This agreement formally solidifies our Friendship School relationship for the next three years, fostering deeper connections between our two schools and promoting mutual learning and respect. We look forward to continuing our close relationship with Kyoto Seibo through the Tomodachi Project once they return to Japan, further strengthening the bonds between our students and school communities.

Phones & Smart Watches Policy
A reminder to all families that students are not permitted to use or wear mobile phones or smart watches during school hours. If these devices are brought to school, they must be handed in at the office and placed in the secure drawers before school starts, and collected after school. Students may wear a regular (non-smart) watch to help them keep track of time, but smart watches with messaging, calling, or other digital functions are not allowed to be worn during the day. If a student needs to contact home, they can come to the office and staff will assist them. Likewise, any messages from parents to students can be relayed via the office. This policy helps ensure a focused and respectful learning environment. We appreciate your support in reinforcing this expectation at home.
Term 3 Student Led Conferences – Save the Date
Our Student-Led Conferences (Parent-Teacher Interviews) on Tuesday 16th September 2025 from 3:45 – 6:00pm (week 10, Term 3).
This is the third year we have run this style of parent-teacher interviews, and the feedback is always incredibly positive. Instead of meeting with just your child’s teacher, you will have the opportunity to meet with your child as well, as we believe that our students are all assessment capable learners who can share their work with you and tell you about their learning journey so far this year. Your child will select some work samples, with the help of their teacher, to share with you and discuss their goals in English & writing.
More information about how to book will be issued closer to the interviews.

Spotlight on Learning
Our Term 3 learning is well underway with our class teachers emailing to families an overview of the learning happening in the different subject areas for this term.
Over the past 2 weeks, classroom teachers have been working with their students on the Learning Intention for their writing unit of learning. Asking your child about this learning intention might be a great connecting question to check for their understanding. The following information below outlines what each Year level is currently focussing on this term in writing:

PBL News
So far this term our focus has been on being:

NAIDOC Week
Prior to the mid-semester break, students at BPSS came together to celebrate the rich culture and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. This year marks a significant milestone—50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience.
The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy", celebrates both the achievements of the past and the promise of a bright future. It highlights the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the enduring legacy of our ancestors.
Students enjoyed a wide range of engaging activities, including art workshops, First Nations games, storytelling, weaving, and yarning circle time. They also participated in creative tasks such as stone painting and making nature bracelets, each experience helping to build understanding, connection, and respect.

Year 6 Captains Continue to Grow as Leaders
Our 2025 Year 6 Captains recently participated in their third focused leadership development day, continuing to build on their skills and confidence as school leaders. The theme for this session was Public Leadership, with a spotlight on managing the demands of leadership with clarity and purpose.
Throughout the day, students explored strategies to juggle competing priorities and responsibilities, refined their presentation skills to support impromptu public speaking moments, and engaged in activities to deepen their understanding of emotional intelligence. It was a valuable opportunity for our young leaders to reflect, practise, and grow together as they continue to represent our school with pride.
In addition to their leadership training, our Captains have continued to promote their legacy focus on Kindness this term, running the Kindness Club every Tuesday and Thursday in the library. This initiative provides students with a welcoming space to enjoy games and stories that promote acts of kindness, all with the aim of nurturing a positive and caring culture across the BPSS community.

NAPLAN
Parents of Year 3 and 5 students should have received their child’s NAPLAN report last week. We are proud of the efforts of our students and staff in achieving outstanding results again.
Parents may wish to refer to the NAPLAN Information for parents and carers (link here)
From 2023, new standards were introduced to NAPLAN reporting. This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards. Education ministers agreed 2023 was the right time to introduce this change alongside moving NAPLAN to March.
Proficiency standards provide clear information on
student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.
There are 4 proficiency levels:
- Exceeding: The student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: The student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: The student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: The student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

eSafety and Digital Wellbeing in Yr 4,5,6
Zanna & the Lost Code
On Tuesday 12 August and Wednesday 3 September Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing performance ‘Zanna & the Lost Code’ for Year 4 and Year 5,6 respectively. This live theatre experience inspires and empowers students to be respectful, responsible, assertive and resilient, both online and offline.
When Zanna and Eddie arrive at coding camp, they embark on a magical journey into the Camp Captain's new online game for kids. Through a series of exciting challenges, Zanna and Eddie experience the power of empathy, respect, kindness and assertive communication. They discover that we all have the power to make the internet a safer and more positive place.
'Zanna & the Lost Code' is developed in collaboration with teachers and psychologists and aligned with key outcomes from the Australian and Victorian Curriculum. The show is designed to spark conversations about bullying, cyber safety and resilience amongst our students.

Class Learning News
Prep - Botanical Gardens Excursion
The Prep classes visited the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens to kick off their science learning.
The adventures began with an exciting bus ride! At the gardens the children explored their senses in nature by participating in the “Wow! This is Sense-ational” educational program led by Botanical Garden staff members.
The classes went on a scavenger hunt throughout the garden spaces spotting many living things, such as bats, various types of birds, eels and turtles, who were a highlight - swimming close to the edge and popping their heads up as if to say hello!
Since returning from the excursion some classes have worked collaboratively to recreate the Botanical Gardens with beautiful hands-on materials and felt animal puppets. The children have made written responses and reflective illustrations of the garden and living things they observed. The children have been inspired to explore the Prep Village environment more closely to look for living things such as worms. We are growing seeds and mushrooms. Some classes have begun building a nature shelf with collected objects such as large rainforest snail shells, birds' nests, small skulls, cicada shells and snake skins. Should you have some interesting natural specimens you could share with the classes we'd love to see them!
