Newsletter – Term 1 Week 7 2025 – Principal’s Pen
What a term! Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred was certainly a surprise no one was expecting this year and definitely left his mark in the Ashmore community. While the storm caused some damage to our school, I am pleased to report that 90% of repairs have already been completed, thanks to the incredible efforts of QBuild and their contractors. Their prompt and professional response has been fantastic, ensuring that our facilities are safe and ready for learning.
I would also like to take this opportunity to praise the resilience and strength shown by our students and families during this challenging time. The delay and interruptions to NAPLAN and the regular school routine have not been easy, but our community has come together to support one another. Your patience and adaptability have been truly inspiring, and we continue to move forward stronger as a school.
Thank you all for your continued support, and please know that we remain committed to providing the best possible learning environment for every student.

Parent Teacher Night
Our first Parent-Teacher Interviews for the year will occur on Tuesday 1st April 2025, from 3:15pm until 7:25pm. Information was emailed earlier this week regarding how to book an appointment with your child’s classroom teacher. Year 5 & 6 students will also be able to book an appointment with a Specialist teacher if they wish to discuss High School Excellence Program applications with them. Parent-Teacher Interviews will occur between the Hall and underneath Block 3. We look forward to seeing as many of our parents as possible on this night. If you are unable to attend an appointment on this evening, you are welcome to reach out to your child’s teacher via email at any time.
Student Attendance Notifications
We’d like to thank all our families who have notified us when their child has been absent from school. Our families have done a great job at letting us know why your child is absent on the day of the absence. Can I please remind families that if your child is absent for a medical reason, please provide a medical certificate to the office where possible. We thank you for helping us to help your child. Our current attendance rate is 95.2% across the school which is excellent!

Prep 2026 Enrolments
It is never too early to enrol for Prep 2025! Please direct all inquiries to Rebecca Sato on this email address: rsato7@eq.edu.au
We run a very thorough and supportive transition process from Kindy to school with many opportunities for both children and parents to become familiar with their new school environment. We have already had visits from our Prep 2026 students currently enrolled at Benowa Early Learning Centre. They had a fabulous time listening to a story with Mrs Birch before having a play on the playground! We have several ‘taster’ mini lessons planned throughout the year, including Japanese, Music and time in our Prep classrooms.
Please read through the information below which outlines our Prep 2026 Information Sessions. We may have a very small number of out of catchment places available. If you are currently out of catchment and would like to be considered, you will need to contact Rebecca Sato and attend our Prep 2026 Information Sessions. Our first Prep 2026 Information Session and Tour is this Monday 24 March at 9.15am in the Hall.

Prep Learning our Phonemes (sounds) Through Play
Our students in Prep have been having way too much fun learning their phonemes (sounds) this term! In conjunction with explicit instruction, our students have been exploring their phonemes through role play and plenty of fine and gross motor activities. Recently, we have been focusing on the phonemes s, a, t, p, i, n & m. Did you know there were acrobatics in a circus?!! Who knew learning could be so much fun?!

GC Bulletin Prep Photos
Once again, we have taken part in the annual GC Bulletin photos. We are waiting to hear when the special edition comes out. We feel that our Preppy Bulldogs are pretty cute and will steal the show! Here is a sneak peek!

Year 1 Fire Education Visit
Our Year 1 students recently participated in a Fire Safety Program with a visit from the fire fighters from the Southport Fire Station. This is always a popular event in our annual BPSS calendar!
The Year 1 students listened carefully and enthusiastically to the fire fighters who spoke about what to do in the event of a fire…stop, drop and roll!
The following day, the students were able to celebrate their fire safety learning with a tour around the fire truck to observe the hoses, tools and safety equipment on board. Next, they each got to spray the hose! Our little ‘fire fighters in training’ continued their learning in the classrooms with fire safety activities and writing about this exciting event!

Belly Crashes the Year 1 Teddy Bear’s Picnic!
This week, the students had a beautiful Teddy Bear’s Picnic under the trees. Belly loved meeting all the teddies, especially the dog shaped ones!

Year 2 Movement Matters!
Our leaders of the early years, are continuing to flourish in a range of activities. To support engagement and concentration, our teachers provide students with a range of activities, that encourage movement as well as sitting and listening. The students have recently been doing yoga as a movement break in between activities!

Yr 6 Captains Youth Leadership Academy
This week, our Student Captains had the privilege of attending the Youth Leadership Academy Australia (YLAA) Dream & Lead Conference at Brisbane City Hall. It was an inspiring day where they connected with other primary school leaders from across Queensland and gained valuable insights from guest speakers Olympian, Brooke Hanson and Orange Sky founder, Nicolas Marchesi.
A key message from the day was that leadership isn’t just about holding a title — it can be both badged and unbadged. True leadership is shown through actions, and one powerful way to lead is by showing empathy. Students were introduced to the GOT Strategy to help with this:
- G – Growing: Pause and consider the situation thoughtfully.
- O – Be Open: Listen and support others with an open mind.
- T – Trusting: Be consistent and reliable in your actions.
The students also explored the idea that challenges help to build resilience. They were encouraged to use the AAA Approach when facing obstacles:
- Accept – Acknowledge the challenge and believe, “I can do this.”
- Acknowledge – Reflect on past successes: “I have won before, I can win again.”
- Ask – Identify what’s needed to power through: “What do I need to move forward?”
The founder of YLAA, Wil Massara guided the students through a framework for creating change. They were encouraged to start by identifying a big issue, then breaking it down to uncover the contributing factors. The key takeaway was to start small: focus on solving just one part of the problem, identify the resources needed, and consider who could help.
A powerful message shared with the students was from Wil Massara, YLAA’s founder:
“My age does not determine my ability to achieve extraordinary things.”
The students were encouraged to take what they had learnt today and put it into action or share with fellow peer.
Certainly an inspiring day, providing the leaders of tomorrow with some fabulous tools to truly make a difference no matter how big or small.

Sport News
Last week, Jack S competed at the Qld State Aquathon championships in Hervey Bay. He finished 19th in Queensland out of the 87 competitors. What an awesome result!
He also competed at the Southcoast Branch Surf lifesaving championships finishing 1st in the Ironman race and 1st in the board Race. Jack has now qualified for the Queensland State championships which will be held in a few weeks time. All the best Jack!

Walker, Jesse and Elijah travelled to the Queensland Oz tag Championships on the Sunshine Coast in late January as part of the Labrador Rabbit’s U11 team. In a major disappointment for the team, Elijah broke his arm 2 days before the championships and was unable to participate but he was there to support from the sidelines.
They played 6 pool games to qualify for the finals and made it all the way to the grand final. Unfortunately, this year they were unable to defend their title but came away as the second best team in the state. Their team has only lost one game in 2 years - unfortunately it was the grand final!
From their performances from across the weekend, Walker and Jesse were selected for the Queensland Oz tag Tri-series in June.
