Term 3 Week 7 2021
Principal's Pen
This week we celebrated our immense success with Education guru and imminent researcher Dr Lyn Sharratt. Dr Sharratt has been working with our Region supporting school development and we were thrilled to share our amazing success with tracking our student data and student outcomes particularly with writing, reading and English. We shared some fantastic images of our Learning Walls with her also and Lyn mentioned they were a critical piece of the success of our beautiful. Whilst Lyn remains in Canada we are pleased to continue our work with her from afar. Some Learning Walls are below.
NAPLAN
I’m very pleased to again share that BPSS exceeded everyone’s expectations with our move to NAPLAN online this year and the outstanding results that are starting to come through from the QCAA of our schools performance. An enormous congratulations to our year 3 students and Teachers who exceeded our school target of 70% upper two bands students with an incredible 73% our best performance yet. Our year 5 cohort also did exceptionally well lifting their mean scale score to well over 500 and hosting 56% of student in the upper two bands for reading. We were also thrilled with 100% of our students reaching National Minimum standard across the testing areas of year 3 reading and writing and Year 5 reading. These two areas have been an incredible focus for us and we are excited with these results placing us within the top 3 highest performing schools in our Region.
Parent Calendar
At the end of each term we send out to all families a copy of the upcoming terms activities through the Parent Calendar. We also publish this as an image on Facebook. To ensure your family are abreast of all the changes and upcoming events please post it up on the fridge.
Bookweek
Thanks again to everyone involved in Book week this year. It was great to see Belly Bulldog causing havoc in the Prep Village as he played with the Dr Seuss Book Cat in the Hat- he didn’t seem to keen on the cat but was excited to wear his hat! A huge thanks as usual to the wonderful Mr Young for his efforts in getting our students to do a flash mob dance whilst we celebrated the winners of best costume with our guest judges MP Mr Rob Molhoek and QBD judge Josh.

Deputy Principal update
Whilst Mrs Watt is on leave for her knee surgery (we expect her back fit and well in 2022) we welcome Acting Deputy Principal Mrs Megan Hay to the role. We are also excited to see Mrs Birch take on her new role with vigour as Deputy Principal.

Learning Goals and Feedback
With Semester 2 learning well underway, students are working towards achieving their Learning Goals identified at the end of last term.
Parents, the upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews in Week 10 will provide you with the opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing since their Semester 1 Report and to raise any concerns you may have about your child’s learning this term. Letters outlining the process for booking an interview through PTO (either online or via the App) were sent home this week.
At this stage, these meetings are planned to be held face-to-face in the Hall; however, should the current circumstances around our COVID restrictions change before Week 10, and further restrictions are put in place, parents who have booked an appointment will instead be offered either an email contact, or a phone call meeting with your child’s teacher, using the times booked through PTO. We will continue to update you should this be the case.
Please note there is no requirement for you to book in with our Specialist teachers. Please click the Curriculum tab on the school website - https://bellevueparkss.eq.edu.au/curriculum , if you wish to know more about these Specialist areas. Specialist Teachers will be available for parents and carers of students in Year 5 only who are wishing to apply for excellence programs in the specialist teacher’s field of expertise, in time for the application window in Term 1, 2022.
We encourage all parents to book in for a 10-minute time slot for a meeting with their child’s teacher.
A Short Break
I’d like to wish everyone a safe and healthy remainder of 2021. I will be taking some personal leave for the remainder of the year but look forward to returning to start the new school year in 2022. In the meantime, I welcome Mrs Hay as she steps into the Deputy Principal role in my absence, alongside our new DP, Mrs Birch. Take care and I’ll see you all next year.

Reading Legends!
I have been so grateful to the incredibly warm welcome I have had from the Bellevue community. It has been lovely popping into the classrooms to see all of the rigorous learning that is occurring this term. I felt very privileged to award some of our reading legends a 150 Days of Reading award. What a sensational commitment that is to their learning! I am looking forward to strengthening my connections with the staff, students and local community, as the year progresses. What a vibrant, fun place this is to be!

STEM@BPSS
Hi Bellevue families,
Congratulations to all the BPSS STEM Competition entrants. We had over 60 projects from Prep to Year 6. We are currently tallying the judges scores and will announce winners in week 9.
Speaking of week 9, due to government restrictions we decided to move our Science week from week 6 to week 9. There will be many activities for students to participate in over the week during lunch, as well as competition winners announced and on show in the STEMosphere.
This week students in year 4 to 6 that elected to participate, sat the ICAS Science test. I would like to congratulate all those students for putting in their best efforts. Results will be available early next term for parents.
Thank you to all the families that have helped with the STEM Competition entries, volunteering for STEM events and supporting your child/ren in STEM education at BPSS.

Class Learning News
Year 5 Lighting the Way!
Year 5 students have been enjoying investigating LIGHT in science. They have worked in groups to explore the properties of light and how it enables us to see. Through investigations, students have been explaining how objects reflect, absorb and refract light. They have been learning how to draw ray and labelled diagrams. Students have worked together to build their science learning wall.
Year 6 Scientists in Action!
Year 6 have had our lab coats and safety goggles out as we continue to explore changing states of matter. From creating mixtures of solids and liquids to create gases, to making our own sherbet and testing which ingredients react to cause the fizzing. This has provided plenty of material to develop our informative writing skills as we explain the results of our experiments.

A USB of the P – 6 show will continue to be for sale via the Qkr app at a cost of $10 each.
Orders for the USB need to be processed and paid via QKR by 3pm Friday 22nd October.
