Belly Spirit Awards
The Belly Spirit Awards are a new positive behaviour for learning (PBL) recognition initiative this year to acknowledge those students that exemplify and consistently follow our 4 school values:
- I am Safe
- I am Considerate
- I am Respectful
- I am a Learner
Each teacher was asked to nominate one student from their class who best demonstrated these values for Term 1 2023. These 30 students became our Belly Spirit Award winners for Term 1 and enjoyed a special morning tea with the Principal and Deputy Principals this week to acknowledge their incredible efforts this term. According to one year 3 winner, the morning tea was her “dream come true”.
The Belly Spirit Awards will be awarded once per term by teacher nominations. We’d like to congratulate all our Term 1 winners and thank you for being such incredible role models for their peers.

Semester 1 Parent-Teacher Interviews
On Tuesday night, we held our first round of Parent-Teacher conferences for the year. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who attended. Most of our teachers were fully booked, and loved the chance to meet the people behind the students in their class. The conversations were incredibly rich and worthwhile, and I know these were valued by both parents and teachers.
Our next formal opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher for a progress update will occur late in Term 3, however please remember you are always welcome to reach out to your child’s teacher at any time to organise a phone call or email if you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress at school, or information you feel your classroom teacher should know.
Staff changes
It is with mixed feelings that we farewell Mrs Donna Patterson (3C), who is taking leave for Term 2. Mrs Patterson is a long-term member of staff and her smile and contagious positivity will be missed around here. In her absence, we welcome Mrs Jo Evans, who will be teaching 3C in Mrs Patterson’s absence. We wish Mrs Patterson a wonderful break, and hope she thoroughly enjoys the time she has planned with her family.

Term 1 Wrap Up
Term 1 has been action-packed for all year levels as we’ve watched our new classes settle in for the new school year and with their learning well underway. I have been so impressed by the students’ ability across the Senior Years from Years 3 to Year 6, to talk about their learning: being able to identify how they are progressing with their learning and what their next steps are. It is very rewarding to celebrate their achievements so far, with Semester 1 Reports due to be shared in Week 10 of Term 2.
NAPLAN is now completed for our Year 3 and 5 students, with a high level of participation by our students this year. Well done to all students and a huge thank you to the staff at BPSS for helping this National assessment period run so smoothly! Parents, the results will be available later this year with your individual child’s results forwarded to you in the mail.
Amazing Learning in Year 6
This term in English, Year 6 have been learning how to include different language features to enhance the tension in their spooky narrative writing. The following is an extract from the assessment piece from our School Captain, Vika Kashyrina, based on a prompt about an abandoned theme park:
A Roller-Coaster Ride with a Difference
Jacob and Fae were the same age. Thirteen, the minimum age that you had to be to go to the prestigious, precocious boarding school they attended. They were both involved in the club that wrote the school newspapers. Jacob specialised in reporting, Fae in photography. Fae was a slight, elegant, girl who looked like she would blow away with the wind. She had wispy strawberry blonde hair and clear, bright, blue eyes. She wasn’t an example of traditional beauty, but, look past that and you would see the ethereal, almost otherworldly, nature of her features. Fae was also rather shy and she didn’t have many friends. Jacob, on the other hand, was as opposite as it was possible to be. He always wore a pressed grey suit that matched his stormy eyes. He was arrogant and smug. However, in the eyes of most girls and adults, he was a star and glowed like an angel. However much he exaggerated it, his skill with a pen was undeniable. When it came to writing he was the king, able to make words bend to his will. Fae and Jacob were paired together for August’s newspaper. The Thriller Amusement Park had always been forbidden to everyone ever since it shut down. To be fair, it was Jacob who decided to go there to get their story.
Fae stepped into the theme park, timidly making her way to Jacob’s side. “What if something goes wrong?” she whispered. “It won’t,” replied Jacob, dismissing her concerns easily with a wave of his hand and setting off into the gloomy theme park. Fae hesitated a moment, then chased after him taking pictures all the way. As she made her way through the forgotten park, it felt as if disembodied figures were stalking her. Finally, they stopped at the entrance to another area of the park. The tattered sign on the archway above read, “Cool Zone”. Fae typed, “Cool Zone, Thriller Amusement Park” into her phone. “The Cool Zone was a part of the park where every ride is water themed or has some sort of water attachment. The purpose of this was to cool down on hot summer days,” Jacob impatiently read over her shoulder. “The main attraction of the area was the Wet Water Rollercoaster which…” Suddenly, Fae’s phone lost its internet connection. “Right, we’re finding this ride,” said Jacob audacious as ever. He ran through the dilapidated archway, carefully avoiding the fallen pieces of the sign on the cracked, brick walkway, and through the Cool Zone. Fae couldn’t help her thoughts running away from her. What if something breaks, she thought. And we can’t get back out? Or what if something else happens? She heard Jacob’s exasperated voice, bidding her to hurry up.

Prep New Build
We have confirmation…. our new Prep Village will be ready for our Prep students at the start of Term 2. The teachers are so excited to start utilising this new outdoor space with the students as part of their daily programs. Teaching both inside and outside in the natural environment is an important part of our program. We will be holding a ‘Grand Opening’ for the community once all the finer details have been finalised. Will keep you posted!

Chaplain - Em Collard
Hi everyone,
We're almost at the end of term 🌞 I hope everyone is tracking along well, & I hope you all have some form of refreshing holidays planned in a week's time!
For those who don't know me, hi! I'm Em, & I'm the new chaplain here at Bellevue Park SS. Students can call me 'Chappy Em.' I work here on Friday's, & I'm located at two other schools the rest of the week.
As Bellevue hasn't had a chaplain before, I thought I'd introduce myself & give an overview of what my role entails!
My role as a chaplain is primarily for social & emotional support. Should a student or family within the community need spiritual support (of any faith backgrounds, I'm also here to support them, too). I'm here as a friendly face, a safe space for students, staff, & parents, I get to implement small groups for social & emotions needs, I'm a bridge to the wider community for everyone, & I empower young people to problem solve through a situation they are facing.
I love seeing young people & individuals thrive & empowered in a community that cultivates their strengths!
Most often, the wider school community see chaplain's just for the students—but I'm not! I'm here for each of you teachers & anyone on staff here, too, just as much as I am here for all the students & their families. The way I see chaplaincy in schools is holistic, & involves community support where necessary. If you (as teachers) are going through something, you also need support, just as much as your students, so that you can thrive in your classrooms. This in turn will be reciprocated to your students thriving!
If you ever need to debrief, need a space to chill/have a coffee or tea break, or just need a friendly face to chat to throughout the day, I'm here! I'm located in Jodi's office on a Friday. Alternatively, feel free to email me, & we can find a time to catch up!
If you see me floating around during class time &/or have the capacity for me to help out in your class (including PE & specialist subjects), please let me know, too! I love the opportunity to see students within their classroom settings, & interacting with you all as teachers & their peers.
Excited to get to know you all, support each of you, & work alongside you, supporting the community here at Bellevue Park SS! Also, a shout out to Jodi for implementing a great wellbeing foundation within the school! I'm excited to work alongside her in providing the best support for our school community.

ANZAC Assembly
We would like to formally invite our Bellevue community to attend Bellevue Park State School’s 2023 ANZAC Day Service.
This service will be led by the 2023 School Captains and will commemorate ANZAC Day by acknowledging past and serving members of the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces.
