2022 Term 2 Week 7
Principal's Pen - Sam Birch
Reading in the Early Years
This week we have held another workshop for our prospective parents for Prep 2023. Kristy Honeywood and I spoke to the parents about the power of oral language and communication. Enriching the students’ oral vocabulary is currently a whole school focus, especially with our early years’ students. The more you read with your child (just for fun!) the richer their vocabulary becomes. Taking the time to read or play with your child has an enormous influence on their overall reading ability. If you are short on time, and you can only do one thing, read a book and have a chat!
The New Build
We are so delighted that building work has finally begun! Fortunately, we are well prepared and have worked hard this semester to problem solve alternative dry spaces for the students. Weather permitting, under Block 3 should be completed by the end of Term 3, which means work will then begin on the basketball courts and the Prep Village. I am in regular communication with the site manager, to ensure that during the works, the safety of students is paramount. I will keep you updated as the build progresses.

NAPLAN Wrap up
Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students and our fantastic staff for the ease with which we participated in the online NAPLAN tests earlier this term. We had minimal issues with our technology and a high level of participation across the two cohorts. Thank you, parents, for your support in having your children at school on time, rested and ready each day.
We look forward to seeing the school’s results sometime next term. Individual student results will be shared with parents later this year.
Year 6 Camp
Our Year 6 students and teachers recently enjoyed their camp experience. Though the weather could have been kinder, the students did not allow the intermittent rain to dampen their spirits. Overall students upheld the school expectations exceptionally well and did our school proud. Some of their favourite moments were:
NAIDOC Week Activities
With NAIDOC Week occurring during the Winter vacation, we will acknowledge and celebrate our First Nation’s peoples’ culture during Week 9 this term. Classes will have the opportunity to participate in a wide selection of activities across the week. We look forward to sharing some of these through FaceBook and the next newsletter.
Semester 1 Report Cards
As we approach the end of Term 2, students will be engaged in end of semester assessment tasks, with teachers preparing to complete Semester One Report Cards. Similar to last year, Report Cards will be emailed to parents in Week 1 of Term 3. This allows for maximum time to complete the learning prior to final assessments to ensure teachers have the most recent information to inform their judgements about student achievement so far this year.
Parents, please let the office know if you have recently changed your email address so you don’t miss receiving your child(ren)’s Report Cards: 1925_admin@bellevueparkss.eq.edu.au

Classroom Spotlight
Starlab
On Tuesday 24th May, Year 3 visited the amazing Starlab in the hall. Students are currently learning about Day and Night in Science. The Year 3 entered the giant dome and went on a journey through our solar system, learning about the Sun, Earth and moon, and the causes of night and day. Starlab is always such a valuable and enjoyable addition to our Year 3 science curriculum!
2B Coolaroo
This term year 2 are investigating mixtures as part of the Science curriculum. Students are discussing how mixtures are resulting in chemical changes. 2B have had a lot of fun learning about materials that don’t mix well, and others that are difficult to separate. Through hands-on investigations, the students have explored how changing the quantities of materials in a mixture can alter its properties and uses.
National Simultaneous Time
Last week on Wednesday the 25th May students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. The book that was shared was called Family Tree. At Bellevue we all read the book at 11:30am. At first break I read the book to students in the library and students participated in an activity related to the book.

Well done to our Tomodachi Project Team. The team has recently produced and sent our first 2022 video of introducing Bellevue Park SS to our friendship school, Tsukubadai Fuzoku Elementary School in Tokyo Japan. Tomodachi means “friends” in Japanese. The team consists of fifteen selected Year 6 students this year. STEM @ BPSS
This week our STEM X students travelled to Merrimac State High School to battle it out in a Southern Schools Cluster Sumo Robotics Competition. The students designed and coded their robots to ‘battle’ another robot and push them out of a ring. All of our teams competed well and won many matches throughout the day!

Ensure your child has an up to date health/action Plan:
Schools can assist students with health support needs such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and anaphylaxis. However, it is important to ensure they have an up-to-date copy of your child’s health/action plans. Speak to the school about how they can support your child. If needed, the school can access the State Schools Nursing Service for support to make sure your child is safe at school.
